Hospitals, emergency care, clinics, and how to check your coverage.
Two hospitals in the city
Brockton is served by two full-service hospitals: Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital at 680 Centre Street and Good Samaritan Medical Center at 235 North Pearl Street. Both operate 24-hour emergency departments, and each anchors a network of doctors’ offices and outpatient services across the city and surrounding towns. Which one you use usually comes down to which one is in your insurance plan, which doctor you choose, and which is closer when it counts.
Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital
Signature is the larger of the two and one of the busiest community hospitals in Massachusetts, certified as a Primary Stroke Service and offering angioplasty for heart attacks. Its main building reopened in August 2024 after a February 2023 electrical fire forced an 18-month closure and roughly $85 million in rebuilding — the renovated campus includes a rebuilt emergency department with a behavioral-health triage unit, a new outpatient surgical facility, upgraded cardiac catheterization labs, and a new solar array. The remaining units, including maternity, were brought back on line through 2025, so the hospital is again fully open; its Signature Medical Group practices cover primary care, OB/GYN, and many specialties at offices in Brockton and neighboring towns. Because the campus is newer than almost any other in the region, it is worth a look for families planning births or anticipating surgery.
Good Samaritan Medical Center
Good Samaritan spent years part of the for-profit Steward Health Care chain, and when Steward went through bankruptcy in 2024 the hospital was sold and, since October 2024, has operated as part of Boston Medical Center Health System — the same nonprofit system that runs Boston Medical Center and has a behavioral-health presence in Brockton. Day to day it functions as a community hospital with an emergency department, surgical services, and outpatient clinics, and the change of ownership has brought more stability and investment after a shaky stretch. If you or a family member were treated there under Steward, double-check that your records and referrals carried over to the new system.
Emergency care and urgent care
Both hospitals’ emergency departments handle true emergencies around the clock — chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe injuries, trouble breathing — and 911 will take you to the appropriate one. For sprains, minor cuts, fevers, and infections that cannot wait for a regular appointment, urgent care centers in Brockton and neighboring towns usually cost far less and move faster, and several take walk-ins seven days a week. Knowing which urgent care locations are in your network, and where they sit relative to your house, is a small piece of homework that pays off.
The VA hospital
Brockton also hosts the VA Boston Healthcare System’s Brockton campus on Belmont Street, a federal veterans’ hospital offering inpatient care, mental health services, and specialty clinics for eligible veterans. It does not serve the general public, but it is a major asset for veteran households choosing Brockton, and VA benefits can coordinate with community providers. Veterans can confirm eligibility and services through the VA’s facility locator.
Community clinics and primary care
Beyond the hospitals, Brockton has a federally qualified community health center downtown plus private primary-care practices and dental offices throughout the city, many with staff who speak Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, and Spanish — reflecting the city’s communities. Establishing a primary care doctor soon after you move matters more here than in some suburbs, because walk-in appointments fill fast and new-patient waits can run weeks. Ask during your home search how far the nearest in-network urgent care and hospital are from any house you are considering.
Check your insurance network before you buy
Massachusetts health plans are network-based, and the two hospitals sit in different systems: Signature is independent, while Good Samaritan belongs to Boston Medical Center Health System. Networks also shifted for many plans during Good Samaritan’s 2024 ownership change, so an old list from a colleague may be out of date. Before you commit to an address — especially if you have ongoing treatment, a pregnancy planned, or a regular specialist — confirm with your insurer that your plan covers both the hospital and the specific doctors you would use, and ask whether the plan’s product (HMO, PPO, a state program) treats the two systems the same.
